Historic Roanoke Park

An urban oasis for over 100 years

SCROLL DOWN

Historic Roanoke Park

An urban oasis for over 100 years

Operating since 1909, Roanoke Park is an original member of Kansas City's historic Parks & Boulevards system, DESIGNED BY GEORGE E. KESSLER.

Nestled between hills and limestone outcroppings southwest of Downtown Kansas City lies historic Roanoke Park. Referred to as Roanoke Park as early as 1904, it officially became a part of Kansas City Parks in 1909 and came to it's current size of 37 acres in 1923. Meant to be held as "a bit of wilderness" according to a 1907 park board report, Roanoke Park truly does feel like a wooded oasis.  Two fresh water springs once bubbled within the park, and a "mystery cave" was a main tenant of the park until the late 1950's. Though the park has transformed into a beautiful, modern recreation area, the evidence of the park's history can be seen all around, and the natural beauty that made the park special in 1909 is still it's marquee feature over a century later.
